We used these for years. No problems - except the tape loader itself... They work well especially if you have a fast disk sub-system.
It's more the software that you are using and how it handles open files and locking them. It's been too long since I've set one of these up on Aix but in Windows some software won't backup open files (which the database may "hold" open even if no one is actively using them). The other problem is the backup software locks the file at the OS level so the database can't read the file and the program aborts.
