I'm like Jeff. I prefer a separate file and routine for generating sequential numbers. This allows for prefixing, suffixing, formatting, padding, and validation of the numbers from one bit of code. Certainly there is always the issue of what happens when a file becomes corrupted, but that's what backups are for.
