I'd like to rename this topic to "when umask attacks". Come to find out the problem with this WRITESEQ was that the log record got created by a user with a umask of 022 and was being updated by a user with a umask of 007. This caused the log to be created with rw-r--r-- permissions and even though the two users were in the same group, there were no group write privs on the file.
