*** Postdoctoral Position in User Modeling and Intelligent Interfaces ***

Department of Computer Science, University of British Columbia,
Vancouver, Canada

We are seeking a highly creative and motivated Postdoctoral Research
Fellow to participate in a new project sponsored by the Institute for
Robotics and Intelligent Systems (IRIS), one of the Canadian Networks
of Centers of Excellence (NCE). The postdoctoral fellow will be
working under the supervision of Dr. Cristina Conati, on the part of
the project related to user modeling and transparent adaptive
interface prototyping.

Interface transparency occurs when the user's efforts are entirely
directed at a task, and not at the interface that supports that task.
The objective of this project is to iteratively design and evaluate
interfaces that transparently adapt various forms of user feedback,
(including visual, auditory and haptic), by relying on low-latency
user models that sense and interpret the user's state in the
interaction context.

The qualifications for this position are a PhD or equivalent in a
research area related to User Modeling, and/or Adaptive Multimodal
Interfaces. An interest in, and experience with, formalisms for
reasoning under uncertainty, cognitive modeling, machine learning,
and/or empirical methods are especially desirable.

The position is located in Vancouver, Canada, in the Computer Science
Department of the University of British Columbia. It is a two-year
appointment, with salary starting at CAN$50.000/year. Because the
project involves a team of prominent researchers in areas that range
from intelligent and multimodal interfaces to the psychology of visual
attention and multimodal encoding, the selected candidate will have a
chance to work in a highly interdisciplinary and stimulating
environment, while enjoying the world-famous beauty of the Vancouver
surroundings.

The position is open immediately and applications will be reviewed as
they are received, until the position is filled. Prospective
candidates should apply with a cover letter and CV, and provide at
least two letters of recommendation. Cover letter and CV can be sent
via email in plain text, Word or PDF to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The
reference letters should be sent to: Dr. Cristina Conati, Dept. Of
Computer Science, University of British Columbia, 2366 Main Mall,
Vancouver, BC, V6T1Z4, Canada.
