POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN PROBABILISTIC LEARNING AT UC IRVINE

Closing Date for Application: January 31st 2005

Description of Position:
This is a full-time postdoctoral research position in Padhraic
Smyth's research group at the University of California, Irvine,
under a recently awarded three-year NSF grant. A primary goal of
the research is to develop new probabilistic learning algorithms
for dynamic temporal processes. A non-exhaustive list of possible
topics of interest include temporal latent/hidden variable models,
dynamic Bayesian networks, stochastic grammars, hierarchical
Bayesian learning, Gaussian processes, and so forth. A second goal
of this project is to apply these techniques to data-driven
problems in the sciences involving temporal data. This will
involve direct interaction with collaborating scientists from UC
Irvine, UCLA, Caltech, and Columbia University. One specific
problem of interest is inferring how genes behave and interact
over time using microarray data measuring time-course gene
expression.

UC Irvine has a very active group of faculty in machine learning,
bioinformatics, and statistics, including Max Welling, Pierre
Baldi, Eric Mjolsness in Computer Science and Hal Stern and David
Van Dyk in Statistics. The campus is located 3 miles from the
Pacific Ocean in sunny Southern California (about half-way between
Los Angeles and San Diego).

Applicants should have a background in probabilistic machine
learning and an interest in applying learning techniques to
scientific problems. Annual salary will be between $41,352 and
$51,660 depending on qualifications. The appointment will
initially be for one year with an option for follow-on appointment
for two additional years.

Prospective applicants should email a copy of their CV, names and
email contact information for at least 3 references, and a link to
online publications, to Padhraic Smyth at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
