The University of Bristol intend to appoint a Chair in Artificial
Intelligence to head the AI group in the Department of Engineering
Mathematics.

The Department of Engineering Mathematics has had a strong group in
Artificial Intelligence (www.enm.bris.ac.uk/ai) over many years under
the leadership of Professor Jim Baldwin (a past EPSRC Senior Research
Fellow). Professor Baldwin retired in 2003 and now holds an honorary
University Research Fellowship. The AI Group has an international
reputation in theory and algorithms for the mathematical treatment of
uncertainty and learning in intelligent systems. This includes
pioneering and fundamental theoretical work in fuzzy and probabilistic
uncertainty, and in neural networks and kernel methods. The Group is
especially well known for development of the mathematical foundations
of these topics with recent theories including those of soft Bayesian
nets and label semantics. Their ethos is that of developing
fundamental theory, implementing it, and applying it to novel
engineering solutions.

Intelligent systems are in the forefront of the revolution in
computing and information. It is commonplace to see computer systems
that control machinery, check documents, recognise voice input, play
games at expert level, make decisions in finance, medicine, travel,
entertainment, etc all using technology developed in artificial
intelligence laboratories through the application of discrete
mathematics. We seek to appoint a research leader in this exciting
area of research who will: complement existing strengths in the
AI Group exploit new opportunities for research enhance the
research potential of existing researchers actively collaborate
and engage in interdisciplinary research, for example with the
Departments of Mathematics, Computer Science or other parts of the
Engineering Faculty.
