At the department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany within the group “Bioinspired Communication Systems” of Prof. Heinz Koeppl the following position is available, starting as soon as possible
PhD Position – Self-Organization & Swarm Robotics (100% E13 TV-H) initially limited for 3 years, with the possibility to extend. The research group investigates the collective dynamics of multi-agent systems in theory and experimentation. Focus is put on active matter systems and their technological embodiments in the form of robot swarms. The PhD research project should investigate the theoretical interplay between the single agent’s internal complexity and the achievable complexity of the emergent collective behavior. Reinforcement learning and deep neural networks will be used to learn local policies from specified emergent properties or from acquired data. The work involves mathematical investigations, extensive simulation and programming work and possibly experimental work within the established quadcopter flying arena of the lab. Technische Universität Darmstadt provides the environment and support for publishing and presenting original research results at leading international conferences and in scientific journals. Your profile: · Completed studies in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics or computer science · Interested to work on theoretical/mathematical problems · Programming skills relevant for scientific computing · Appreciation for interdisciplinary work and proactive drive to collaborate Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral thesis) will be given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate. Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female researchers and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference.
