I'm using Dapper fully updated and gnopernicus with the magnifier feature. I have an AMD Athlon XP processor (1,8 GHz), 512 RAM, and an ATI RADEON 7000/VE (64 VRAM) graphics card that gives me ~200 FPS when using the "ati" driver as configured by Ubuntu. I tweaked
xorg.conf (16-bit color depth instead of 24 and the "radeon" driver with some options instead of "ati") and managed to get up to ~500 FPS. The "radeon" driver offers 3D acceleration for my card, wich is to old to work with "fglrx".
But gnome-mag is very slow and it freezes when I open more than one application. Closing gnopernicus doesn't close gnome-mag, so I have to kill the "magnifier" process in the System Monitor.
I attached my xorg.conf file, "untweaked", after a fresh install.
Please tell me if you ever encountered these gnome-mag freezes. Is it because my hardware is not powerful enough? Is there any way I can fix this problem?
