Perhaps I wasn't clear. I'm saying that there is no set of key bindings which will work on all hardware. Therefore we need more than one set of default layouts. It's not quite that simple, because some users have easy access to numeric keypads and some don't, as the original post mentioned. But whatever defaults are suggested, the user should be allowed to override on start up.
