I think by default, pidgin is set up to put an icon up on the gnome panel,
which is probably not accessible. I suggest you check the preferences to see
whether this is changable, so that if you try closing the main window, it warns
you that you are about to kill the conversations etc.
Other users on this list may have other advice, as I am not a user of pidgin.

Why do you not want to use nautilus? Its the best bet for file management under
GNOME, particularly as far as accessibility is concerned.
