Hi, I was having the same problems with pulseaudio. The pauses every few wordes were quite interesting. Removing pulse solved sound problems for more than just orca though. I am still using speech-dispatcher with no problems. Did you remember to run spd-conf and set it to use alsa instead of pulse? I am using 64 bit Karmik.
