Hi,
If you are comfortable with an IRC client, I find bitlbee to be a great
solution.
www.bitlbee.org
I use this over ssh in a screen session.
Also, a tip for any client you use if you want to get msn back msn can
be accessed as an xmpp jabber account by adding somen...@messenger.live.com
even if your msn is a different address than live.com, just add a random
name and then go through the oauth process to authorize the proper address.
There is also a jabber skype gateway through jabbim.com, but it hasn't
been that stable for me. it costs about $9 a year.

I have been using pidgin for quite a while now but some changes to
libpurple has made it not work with openfire which is what we use here
at work. I am finding problems with gajim and empathy although that
may be me. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.
Gajim seems to lock up my desktop on a fairly regular basis and I am
not finding a way to read messages people send in empathy and also it
is not showing all my contacts and I can't seem to get to the accounts
stuff.
Any thoughts?
