It may not contribute much to this thread but I'm reminded of a quote
that I first saw in this slide from Greg Kroah-Hartman's keynote at
OLS 2006:

The whole presentation is a very worthwhile read (imho) and has some
great slides in it (my favourite is the one beginning with "Wow, for
such a small file..."). While it's about the kernel, much of its
sentiment can be applied to that (all too entrenched it seems) wider
usage of "Linux".
