I agree with Paul, in that the cost of the entry level HP LaserJet series is not too expensive! in fact you will spend way more on the first toner refill but that's just the way of things. But I too am a fan of HP because nearly all there printers just work in Linux!
But if you have the absolute need to use a true network printer then I would still recommend a HP! but really you would do better hooking it up to a PC that is on mostly all the time then just share it though CUPS, then your other PC's on the network just connect to it using IPP... Simple!
