If you're not anti-non-free codecs, consider the Medibuntu project: http://www.medibuntu.org/ Guides are on the site to add the repositories to your software update sources, and from there install new files for non-free/proprietary/binary-only codecs. Other useful tools for converting video include AVIDemux, mencoder, transcode and VLC.
