Hi all,

I have been watching as the whole structure and leadership discussions
has come up again.

I've looked back over the archives for this year. Based on the amount
of energy exerted by people discussing things on this list and IRC about
"what's f'd with the LoCo" they could have organised and run several
real meat space events.

I know for some people ubuntu is their first experience with the
free/open source software community. This can lead to some
misunderstandings around how things work in such communities.

Instead of people blaming others and the organisation structure for why
things aren't working, look at your own contributions. This list is
here to facilitate actions, but most of the time I just see people
finding excuses for why things aren't happening.

I have to agree with Dave's sentiments here. There has been too much heat and not enough light in our recent discussions.

To my eye, the main things that have really caused issues are:

  1. limited commit access to the ubuntu.org.au/ubuntu.com.au web site
  2. confusion over which is the official mailing list
  3. porn in the Google group
  4. vague perceptions that more "transparency" and "accountability",
and a change in structure, is needed

My suggested solutions:

  1. Create your own blog. Ask Melissa (or whoever) to add it to
Planet Ubuntu AU. Start creating events, blog entries, and other
content so compelling that Melissa (or whoever) asks you to post
it on the main site, and gives you an account to do so.
  2. Check out the latest version of
     https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/MailingLists - i hope you
like my clever use of headings! ;-)
  3. Use Gmane or the official Canonical list server.
  4. Stop worrying about transparency, accountability (however you
define those), and structure. Do cool stuff with Ubuntu. Tell
other people about it and invite others to join you, both here on
the list and in your local area.

Paul

P.S. One area of confusion for me: which of ubuntu.org.au/ubuntu.com.au is the official/preferred/default web site?
