This is probably a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/346691

I've had a similar kind of behaviour (ext3 getting corrupted over time,
eventually package management getting messed up etc) on a Dell Latitude D830.
According to observations in the above bug report, the issue appears to be
related to ICH8/ICH9 chipset families. In my case, lspci gives
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE
Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA IDE
Controller (rev 02)
