"I don't see how anyone is tricked" The user _feels_ tricked, because no common users would imagine that a "long time supported" "operating system built by a worldwide team of expert developers" which is "is an open-source alternative to Windows and Office." would means that the _applications_ who runs on it are not upgradable.
No really, i meant it. Think about it - Who but the most debian-aware computer users would understand that an OS stability would mean that Applications such as an Office suite can't install ? Any other users would _feel_ tricked. It should be crystal clear that by buying, e.g. a dell netbook sold with Ubuntu 8.04 at local European supermarket, the user will face either a risky upgrade needed twice a year (which almost always need minor tricks using cli afterward - watch Ubuntu forums at those time, where every poor users are told that "they weren't forced to upgrade anyway, that's what LTS is for") or renounce to the last, say, PC-magazine-advertized OpenOffice.org 3 suite that he could have trivially installed should he had choosen the MSWin versions of the same netbook. How not to feel tricked when you're a simple users if you weren't clearly warned ? Is that situation really good for the Ubuntu project ? I don't think so. Pushing from Alan Rick effort, i suggest also adding the short info on http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/910features , regarding the "software center section", for example, positively starting the paragraph with something such as "Ubuntu also manages your applications for you. Unlike other Operating Systems, you will be assured to always run the lastest Open Source applications, for as long as you keep it updated on new releases" -- LTS Download Page has misleading content https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445460 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Backports Testing Team, which is subscribed to Hardy Backports. -- ubuntu-backports mailing list ubuntu-backports@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-backports
