I think Andreas was a bit mis-informed when he told you to open a
backport request.

As a rule, we try to use the backports process to offer new features
added to newer version of software, and we use the SRU process
(http://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates) for fixing bugs.

In accordance with that, I'm going to close this bug, and open an SRU
task on bug #608904
