If you have downloaded VirtualBox from Ubuntu repository, you have downloaded the VirtualBox OSE (Open Source Edition), Which has limited features.
@ Omi Azad, shared folder worked for me everytime. Only last two minor versions of VirtualBox 1.x has some problems. Two notes, 1. The shared folder name you are adding on VirtualBox must be the name of a shared folder from the host OS. 2.
