Du meter from hagel does a splendid job of showing the bandwidth usage by
graph, notes, charts and what not. I was wondering if something of that
sort is available for linux too.

Both on KDE and gnome, the system monitor shows network data in graphs. But only for current sessions! They are not logged and details are not provided for weekly or monthly period! I'll be looking this thread for any software :)
