I have backported the upstream fix from GNOME/mutter#4678 to address the ghost cursor when the stylus leaves proximity.
The branch has been rebased on ubuntu/resolute-devel and the Merge Proposal is open for review: https://code.launchpad.net/~tony-s/ubuntu/+source/mutter/+git/mutter/+merge/513212 I verified the fix locally on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Wayland) given I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga Gen 6 and this affects me; the ghost cursor is eliminated and tablet focus behaviors remain normal. The bug description has been updated with the full SRU justification. Requesting sponsorship for upload to resolute-proposed. ** Description changed: + [ Impact ] + Users with graphics tablets, convertibles, or styluses (such as Wacom, Surface Pen, or Lenovo Yoga devices) experience a persistent "ghost" cursor stuck in the top-left corner (0,0) or at the last touch coordinate whenever the screen layout refreshes (e.g., invoking the Activities overview, switching windows with Alt+Tab, or locking/unlocking the screen). In creative applications such as Krita, application windows touching this ghost cursor cease registering tablet and pen input entirely. + + The issue has been resolved upstream in GNOME Mutter (issue #4678) and + shipped in newer development releases, but Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (resolute) + remains unpatched. + + [ Test Plan ] + 1. Log into a standard Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Wayland session on a device with a pen/stylus or connected drawing tablet. + 2. Hover or draw with the stylus to activate the tablet cursor, then lift the pen completely away from the digitizer surface (triggering PROXIMITY_OUT). + 3. Press the Super key to open the Activities Overview, or switch windows using Alt+Tab. + 4. Observe failure: A ghost stylus cursor unexpectedly pops back into view stuck at (0,0) or at its last coordinate alongside the standard mouse pointer. + 5. Upgrade to the patched mutter package (50.1-0ubuntu2.6) from -proposed or PPA. + 6. Repeat steps 2 and 3. + 7. Verification: The stylus cursor cleanly despawns on proximity out and does not reappear during view updates or window switching. + + [ Where problems could occur ] + The patch modifies `update_devices_in_view_foreach_cb()` in `clutter/clutter/clutter-stage.c` to skip devices lacking a current target actor. + Potential regressions are limited to pointer and input device focus tracking—specifically, scenarios where a pointer device has its focus actor temporarily inhibited, or edge cases where a stylus rapidly re-enters proximity before a target actor is re-evaluated. The risk is minimal because a subsequent PROXIMITY_IN event naturally assigns a new valid target actor. + + ---- + i have a wacom tablet for art 'n stuff but when i dont have the pen on the surface and i lock my system or do something else that changes the entire screen/menu it puts a second cursor in the upper left corner but it doesn't seem to activate the hot corner. i can drag my pen and let loose to remove it but it comes back every time. also when i have my pen on the wacom tablet and i move my mouse i have two cursors even when i stop moving the mouse the mouse cursor also stays. i am on ubuntu 26.0.4 thank you so much for looking after this. -thijs knaap ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 26.04 Package: xorg (not installed) ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 7.0.0-30.30-generic 7.0.12 Uname: Linux 7.0.0-30-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.34.1-0ubuntu0.1 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: pass CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Sun Aug 23 09:31:52 2026 InstallationDate: Installed on 2026-08-18 (5 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 26.04 "Resolute Raccoon" - Release amd64 (20260423.1) ProcEnviron: - LANG=en_US.UTF-8 - PATH=(custom, no user) - SHELL=/bin/bash - XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=<set> + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + PATH=(custom, no user) + SHELL=/bin/bash + XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=<set> SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu Resolute) Status: Triaged => In Progress ** Changed in: mutter (Ubuntu Resolute) Assignee: (unassigned) => Tony Rice (tony-s) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2164838 Title: wacom touchpad mouse gets stuck in corner when not used directly To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mutter/+bug/2164838/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
