Public bug reported: SUMMARY My desktop display intermittently freezes during ordinary desktop use. The last image and mouse pointer remain visible, but the pointer does not move and keyboard shortcuts produce no visible response. Restarting has been necessary to regain a usable desktop. There is no reliable reproduction sequence yet.
SYSTEM - Kubuntu / Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS (resolute), KDE Plasma Wayland - Kernel observed after the affected restarts: 7.0.0-38-generic; linux-generic package 7.0.0-38.38 - KWin: 6.6.6; kwin-wayland package 4:6.6.6-0ubuntu0.1 - GPU: Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 XT, Navi 48, PCI 1002:7550 rev c0, subsystem 1da2:3490, address 03:00.0 - GPU firmware information from the 18:11 boot: VBIOS 113-3E490TX-UP4, DMUB 0x0A000800, SMU firmware 104.76.0 (interface 0x33); driver SMU interface reported as 0x2e. SMU initialization reported success. No causal conclusion is drawn from these values. - Driver: distribution-provided in-kernel amdgpu - Mesa libgl1-mesa-dri: 26.0.8-1ubuntu0.3 - linux-firmware: 20260319.git217ca6e4.1ubuntu - Display configuration captured on 11 October: one DisplayPort display, DP-2, 3440x1440 at 100 Hz, scale 1, automatic 10-bit colour; HDR unavailable - No newer candidate for the four checked packages (linux-generic, linux-firmware, libgl1-mesa-dri, kwin-wayland) in configured Ubuntu repositories after apt update on 16 October OCCURRENCES (Europe/London, BST / UTC+1) - 10 October 2026: first observed freeze. Previous-boot logs included an AMD flip_done timeout at 19:57:24 and repeated KWin pageflip timeouts around 20:56 before restart. - 11 October 2026: another freeze. KWin pageflip timeouts began at 22:35:27, kernel flip_done timeout at 22:35:36, and further flip_done/commit-wait timeouts at 22:35:52. - 15 October 2026: same visible symptom reported; logs were not collected, so its cause is unverified. - 16 October 2026: another freeze. KWin pageflip timeouts began at 18:10:25; the kernel logged flip_done timed out at 18:10:30; KWin continued reporting timeouts through 18:10:56. - 16 October 2026, second occurrence: repeated KWin amdgpu pageflip timeouts began at 18:46:21 and continued through 18:46:44. This was approximately 36 minutes after the preceding failure, after restarting into 7.0.0-38 again, before the bug report could be submitted. This newest kernel tail does not contain another flip_done timeout; it must not be represented as a newly captured kernel flip_done error. ACTIVITY / REPRODUCTION These are intermittent failures during normal desktop use, not a stress-test result. During the 11 October incident, a YouTube video was playing and the ChatGPT desktop application was outputting an audit result. The first incident happened while reading an already-loaded web page. A particular application has not been established as the cause. The desktop initially worked without this problem for approximately a week. A regression from a particular earlier kernel is not yet demonstrated. WHAT REMAINED ALIVE Caps Lock sometimes initially responded and later appeared unresponsive. Ctrl+Alt+F3/F4 did not produce a visible text console. On 11 October, however, logs recorded getty@tty3 starting and fbcon taking over after the console-switch attempt, and applications continued logging. The evidence therefore does not establish a complete kernel lockup. WORKAROUND ATTEMPT On 11 October, changed DP-2 VRR policy from Automatic to Never using kscreen-doctor. Further freezes were reported on 15 and 16 October. After the 16 October restart, kscreen-doctor still showed Vrr: Never. The supplied log excerpts do not independently record the VRR state at the instant of the freeze. The previously installed 7.0.0-34-generic kernel is available for comparison, but no comparison result exists yet. Please do not treat it as a confirmed working kernel. EXPECTED RESULT The desktop continues displaying updates and accepting input during normal use. ACTUAL RESULT The display stops updating. KWin repeatedly logs "Pageflip timed out! This is a bug in the amdgpu kernel driver" and the kernel logs amdgpu flip_done timeouts. Earlier occurrences also show commit-wait timeouts. Restarting has been required for recovery. RELATED REPORTS (same underlying defect NOT confirmed) - https://www.spinics.net/lists/dri-devel/msg554348.html : Navi 48 on Linux 7.0, random freezes with flip_done/commit-wait timeouts - https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2168721 : Ubuntu 26.04 / RX 9070 XT freeze report; its detailed crash differs from the supplied excerpts REQUEST Please help determine whether this matches an existing amdgpu display issue, which further diagnostics or controlled test are needed, and whether a relevant fix exists upstream or is scheduled for Ubuntu. I can add results from testing the earlier installed Ubuntu kernel. ADDITIONAL INFO I have now booted 7.0.0-34-generic for comparison, but haven’t used it long enough to determine whether it resolves the freezes.
