Hey there Collin! I understand your frustration, especially the part about uutils taking features from GNU coreutils, *and* those feature then being exclusive to uutils on Ubuntu.
Let me try to explain it from our perspective. The uutils coreutils getting the "preferential treatment" has to do with two important points: 1. Newer versions fix critical bugs, bugs that impact both users and package builds, making updates a necessity. GNU coreutils, being more mature, does not have critical bugs to the same extent. 2. The uutils coreutils are the default on Ubuntu and thus the aforementioned bugs have a larger blast radius. This means that updates get a higher priority. I can personally assure you that we are *not* intentionally holding back GNU coreutils. Ubuntu being a Debian derivative, we take (for most packages) the version from Debian. Even now, Debian is still providing version 9.10 [1] of the coreutils which means that we are in sync. If Ubuntu were to jump ahead to version 9.12, this means that we would go out-of-sync with Debian, introducing more maintenance work for Ubuntu developers. Furthermore I want to highlight that Ubuntu has always used the base version of GNU coreutils from Debian historically. In the case of the uutils coreutils, getting out-of-sync with Debian has been warranted due to the points I mentioned before. Debian does not suffer the same consequences from these bugs as GNU coreutils are the default there. In the meantime I recommend contacting Debian regarding updating to 9.12 and including your provided patch, as that would have a larger impact. If you believe the uutils developers are doing something incorrect, I would suggest having a conversation with them. I also want to spare a few words to thank you for the great work on the maintenance of the GNU coreutils; I am confident this is seriously appreciated across the GNU/Linux community.
