It really seems related to the size AND to the path of the file as Malone bug
#25702 and OpenOffice.org bug #62648 (about a Ubuntu build) seems to imply...
Probably the thumbnail image cache of Impress is invoked more often for big
images and it doesn't like the ../ path for some reasons.
OpenOffice.org bug #63299 has a dbg trace on Dapper:

This seems not reproducible in the official builds, so this is Ubuntu-
specific.
Malone bug #35313 is related to this problem but has no more
information.
I will post a dbg trace today.
