I rebooted into xfce, opened a terminal and editted /etc/apt/sources.list to include:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted I then did $ sudo aptitude update $ sudo aptitude upgrade THEN launched the installer (and chose reiserfs this time instead of xfs as the single mega-partition type).
