Yup, that was the real bug. I installed the Dapper kernel package,
rebooted and lpinfo showed usb://Samsung/ML-1740 as before. The
printer is working from my Windows systems again. Local print test
page didnt work, strangely, but I don't print from the server directly
anyway.

Thank you - should a bug report be opened about the Dapper upgrade
*not* installing the newest kernel?
