I've had no problems with other OS' and have even managed to run Live
distros off this drive.

This seems to be a problem that has been popping up in various places so
I think it's unlikely to be a dirty lens problem

For reference, here's a link to a forum thread where a few people have

I've confirmed that the drive is a Mitsumi CR-4804TE if this helps at
all.
