since version 0.9.6 grub expects the file /boot/grub/default to exist if savedefault option is used. The update-grub command does not auto-create the file if it is missing but always adds option "savedefault" to the default boot entry. I'm wondering how many people did never have a "default" file and now run into trouble e.g. when dist-upgrading from breezy to dapper.
