Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-2-generic

The default kernel refuses to boot shortly into the boot process. The
noapic kernel option does allow it to complete the boot process.

The last few lines before it hangs look like this:

[    1.021351] checking TSC synchronisation [CPU#0 -> CPU#1]: passed.
[    1.024063] Brought up 2 CPUs
[    1.024132] Total of 2 processors activated (6916.76 BogoMIPS).
[    1.025090] net_namespace: 840 bytes
[ 1.025171] Booting paravirtualized kernel on bare hardware
_

When provided with the noapic option is does show still show this
message briefly, not certain if it is related.

ACPI: EC: GPE storm detected, disabling EC GPE

This thread shows someone with apparantly the same problem on a Fujitsu
Siemens Li1718.
