I have a workaround for nfsroot booting Intrepid:  
boot with break=init
touch /cow/etc/init.d/NetworkManager
exit

 You will boot normally, but N-M won't run (because files in /cow take
precedence over files in filesystem.squashfs, so it's init script is
empty).
