Sitsofe: Thanks for the tip on sudo. I have been investigating and there is yet another way for setting those parameters using the sysctl command. And it looks like the correct/best way of perpetuating the settings is through the /etc/sysctl.conf file, that loads sysctl values at boot time. See http://www.linux.com/feature/146599.
