Can you comment which version of Intrepid you installed?  Was it the
most recent Alpha5 - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha5 ?
Also, I'm curious, if rather than booting in recovery mode, if you just
remove the 'quiet' and 'splash' boot options, does that work for you?
If that works, it would indicate this might actually be an issue with
usplash rather than the kernel.  Thanks.
