in gconf-editor ,there is a new key after the update--with no settings in it
the original key (with settings) is
/schemas/desktop/gnome/session/required_components
the new (empty key) is /schemas/desktop/gnome/session/required-components

did the update somehow add this new key(with no settings),and point
gnome at it instead of the original?

My gnome desktop works fine --all my settings there -- with the E16
window manager, but if I try to just boot into a gnome session--it hangs
my computer with the "status256" message.

My .xsessions-errors is attached--don't know if it will help.
