Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

Selecting text adds it to the clipboard in Gnome Terminal, however if
you have selected text in the clipboard buffer it behaves independently.

Example: Select text on the terminal. De-select the text (click
somewhere else). Right click on a URL (in the terminal text) and click
'Copy Link Address'. The address goes into the X/Gtk (whatever it is)
clipboard and can be pasted into Firefox or wherever for example. If you
middle click on the terminal (paste binding) or CTRL+INS it pastes the
previously selected text /not/ the URL in the clip board. If you right
click on the terminal and select "Paste" it pastes the URL as expected.

Contrary to this, if you go to another window and copy some text to the
clipboard it /does/ override the selected text buffer in Gnome Terminal.

This usability is confusing :)

[Ubuntu 8.04 up to date - but this has has been the same behavior for
years now]
