It is correct that it's possible there are other bugs in the 8.10 alpha just as well as there are bugs in all software. But why not try it out and see if it works for you? You could at the same time provide feedback to the Ubuntu guys in order to give them the information they need to ensure that this will work out of the box in 8.10.
In order to manually configure x.org, you can edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf with your editor of choice. You could potentially also try running with the "vesa" driver instead. It will give you no hardware accel and it might not work either, but at least it's worth a shot. In terms of compatibility, you will find that GNU/Linux probably has the best out of the box support for hardware of all current operating systems. It is true that there are newer pieces of hardware not working properly but not all hardware manufacturers have realized the importance of supporting the free/open software movement.
