Public bug reported: This bug was reported in Hardy (219345: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219345). I have determined that some USB devices will cause the desktop to freeze. In this frozen condition, pressing the caps-lock key does not cause the caps-lock LED to light and ctrl-alt-del does not appear to register - there is no reboot.
The machine is a Sony Vaio VGN-270P. The linux release was 2.6.27-2 generic. I booted the machine with Intrepid using a live Intrepid CD - that is, I did not install the distribution on the machine, but only in memory. Plugging in a Wacom tablet via USB will cause the desktop to freeze - this happened within seconds of plugging in the table and moving the mouse and pen. This is the same behavior that occurred in Hardy. It did not occur in Gutsy, but the tablet was not functional in Gutsy, either. A USB-connected disk drive appears to work properly. This was not the case in Hardy - the anomalous behavior was mostly in locking folders after copying into them. I haven't tested the USB-connected drive sufficiently to determine if it works or not. Good luck with this.
