WOW, this is a very long thread! I would like to confirm this. Now, I have not read all the posts here, but in my opinion enabling backspace would make it more intuitive for people coming from a Windows(/MAC?) world. I guess it's all about user-experience. If ALT+LEFT/RIGHT is still enabled, I really don't see the "harm".
