Same problem in kde4.1.1, nvidia-177. Desktop effects on/off doesn't matter.
X always hangs just after logging in to kde4, random lockups occurs when using X. [mi] mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping. [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. Many of these in X.org.log. The look is released after about 30 seconds, and then one can use X again, until next lockup.
