Also, I found that r-base-core depends on "atlas3-base | refblas3 | libblas.so.3" in Debian unstable. So unless the Ubuntu R packages are very different from the Debian ones, the r-base-core package alone will drag in GCC 3.4 dependency (package libg2c0 and gcc-3.4-core).
