It's an alternative way of specifying the type of segment to
create e.g. mirror, snapshot, error, zero etc.
E.g. lvcreate -s is treated internally as a shortcut for lvcreate --type
snapshot.

Maybe someone would submit a man page patch to the lvm-devel list...
