Then the focus is fixed on the panel and the selection of the menu buttons cannot be aborted (hovering over the menu buttons in the panel will color them as if the menu is opened but invisible). The only chance to get it back to normal is by killing the X-session with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace and logging in again. Sound works, though, and is adjustable through sliders.
