Thanks for your message. I've just had a chance to try it on Alpha 6. The bug is gone, as far as I can tell. At any rate, repeating the original test (for ((i=0;i<10000;i++)); do echo $i > /dev/null ;done), completes in about 1/2 second, which is now perfectly OK. Thanks for your help - Richard
