I can confirm this; on my eeePC, the VGA (VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 04)) port is not hot plugable. It must be present when X is starting (after usplash) otherwise it is not seen as a valid method for output (even by xrandr). another workarround is to restart X (ctrd-alt backspace).
