Happens to me too:

Video: Intel 945GM
Compiz: tested both with and without.

I'm glad I do most of my image manipulation with the Python Imaging
Library these days, since this is maddening enough with my light usage.

The (blank) window does still respond to events, so it's possible to
(blindly) type in a filename. Symptoms remind me of an issue I had with
wxWidgets some time ago, in which I was accidentally removing paint
handlers from a dialog before that dialog had been destroyed.

Hope this gets fixed. I'm kind of worried that it's low priority, since
it's exactly the kind of icky user experience quirk that would scare
users away.
