I seem to remember that this requires gnuplot to be built against the GNU readline library and whether this is possible depends on your reading of the gnuplot license. I second the request, though: gnuplot is vastly more pleasant to use with readline support and the lack of it in Debian/Ubuntu is much lamented on the Web, e.g. http://www.miscdebris.net/blog/2007/04/27/install-gnuplot-on-ubuntu/?
