Hello, I'm also an owner of a Nvidia card on Ubuntu 8.10 and have this problem when using Evolution. Furthermore I found the same problem when using LyX (LaTeX environment). I've just opened the LyX tutorial from the help menu and could see this strange behaviour which was familiar to me from Evolution. (I'm not sure if it was related with re-sizing the window).
