Am running 8.04 but it's been present for many versions now. I agree it could be a video issue, I don't have the time to confirm if it occurs without compiz at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't.
As my recommendations... I really have none, I only use sound-juicer when banshee can't find a CD.
