Deleting ~/.pulse* didn't help. I even created a new user account to test, with the same results.
The device listed in Sound Preferences and pavucontrol is: Alsa PCM on front:0 (VIA 8237) via DMA I think this business with front:0 has something to do with it. I do not recall ever seeing that in my sound configuration before this round of updates. Luke, if it would help. I would be happy to provide ssh access to the box.
