If I do a Ctrl-Alt-F1 just after the login screen, the command line displays
O.K.
I then listen for boot to complete. When activity stops, I do a
Ctrl-Alt-F7 then the Gnome desktop displays, background, top & bottom lines,
the whole bit. For about a second. Then everything goes black again.
Same thing in both CD Live and Install.

daemon.log had an interesting entry:

Oct 1 11:54:17 Thinkpad x-session-manager[5571]: WARNING: Unable to
find provider 'gnome-wm' of required component 'windowmanager'

Maybe that's why Xubuntu and Kubuntu run and Ubuntu-Gnome doesn't.
